In July of 1919, the Wingfoot Air Express, a blimp owned by Goodyear, caught on fire and crashed into the Illinois Trust & Savings Bank in the loop.

The ship was taking passengers from Grant Park to the White City Amusement Park on the south side. The crash occurred on its first day in operation, and only the third trip. (The first was for employees only.)

Several people died, including many women working as secretaries in the bank, who were unable to escape the flames.
