The spire atop the Trump Tower, which makes the building the second tallest in Chicago and third in the country, was added at the insistence of Mayor Daley

Rate this fact:

Initial plans were for the tower to be a whopping 150 stories and the tallest building in the world (at the time it was announced), but after the September 11 attacks, Trump scaled it back to 92 stories. The building, including its spire, is 1,389ft, making it the second tallest building in Chicago and third in the country. However, without the spire, the building is only 1,170ft, which would make it only barely taller than the Aon Center (the Standard Oil Building) and the John Hancock, and shorter than the Empire State Building in New York.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Trump "hated the look of it", but conceded.
